Excelsior Classical Academy is a public charter school. We are governed by a local, independent board and are authorized by and accountable to North Carolina State Board of Education and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Office of Charter Schools. As a charter school, we
- are independent from Durham Public Schools,
- are able to select our own curriculum,
- are exempt from the NC law mandating school start and end dates, and
- can hire some teachers who do not have teaching licenses, such as biologists for teaching biology and chemists for teaching chemistry. (At least 50% of our teachers must be licensed.)

Our Annual Fund campaign focuses on four key areas that are vital to our students’ success:
Transportation: It is important to us to provide transportation to make our school accessible to all students who want to attend. Your contributions help us purchase and maintain our school buses, ensuring that every child has safe and dependable access to education. We spend about $474,480 on bus transportation annually.
Free Lunch Program: We believe that no child should go hungry during the school day. Donations to our campaign support our free lunch program, providing nutritious meals to students who may need them, helping them focus on learning without the distraction of hunger. Our free lunch program is budgeted for about $198,000 for the 2024-25 school year.
Uniform Assistance: We want every student to feel included and part of our school community. Your support helps provide uniform assistance to families in need, ensuring that all students can feel a sense of belonging at our school. Our budgeted amount for uniform assistance for the 2024-25 school year is about $11,000.
Arts and Language Programs: Our arts and language programs are essential for fostering creativity and cultural understanding. Contributions from our campaign enable us to offer a diverse range of classes and activities that enrich our students’ education and help them develop valuable skills. Our budgeted amount for supplies and for teacher salaries and benefits for our arts and language programs is $1,111,567.68 for the 2024-25 school year.
By participating in our annual campaign, you help us bridge the funding gap and ensure that every student at our school has access to high-quality education and support. Your generosity makes a significant impact, allowing us to maintain our commitment to excellence and equity and to provide a nurturing environment where all students can flourish. Thank you for being an essential part of our school community!
